“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”
― Socrates
I believe that the purpose of public education is to develop lifelong learners who know how to think critically, whose curiosity is stimulated, who have the creative and collaborative skills needed to thrive in a continually changing world, and who have the character to make the world a better place.
My oldest grandson is a member of the class of 2031 (pictured on his first day of kindergarten) How do we develop his class into lifelong learners with these characteristics? If we keep doing what we are currently doing will he and his classmates be prepared to thrive in a continually changing world? |
I believe that the effective transformation of education to prepare today's learners for their future addresses at least 3 elements:
Effective Leadership focuses on how to be, not what to do. Leadership is the ability to distinguish between the operational and the aspirational; operational are those things that have to be done and are frequently compliance driven. Aspirational are those things that you want to be and are values driven. Effective leaders are able to focus on the aspirational.

Learner Centered Instruction shifts the focus of instruction from teacher to student, from standardized to personalized instruction. The emphasis shifts away from the instructor and the content, and towards the learner, who moves from passive consumer of information to active developer of knowledge, skills and dispositions, and ownership of the learning.
If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

Digital Fluency is the aptitude to effectively and ethically interpret information, discover meaning, design content, construct knowledge, and communicate ideas in a constantly changing digitally connected world.
